Why do I need a dental crown?

Crowns are commonly used to repair damage that has affected the structure and function of a tooth. As they replace the whole outside structure of the tooth, they provide a full rebuild and overall restoration, with excellent results.

Your dental crown is custom-made to ensure a precise and comfortable fit. They can be made from a variety of materials to suit your needs and preferences, and we always fully explain your options to help you make an informed choice. For teeth that have had multiple fillings, extensive decay, and general damage, a crown is the way forward.

What is involved in the treatment?

We first ensure that the internal structure of the tooth is intact and that there are no signs of infection present. We prepare your tooth by removing a layer of tooth structure, making sure we leave a strong core.

We take impressions of your teeth and record their colour so your crown can be made to fit perfectly. Between appointments, we protect the prepared tooth with a temporary crown.

When your crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the new permanent one is fixed in place with a strong dental cement.

Types of dental crowns

Non-precious metal crowns

Metal crowns are long-lasting and extremely hard-wearing. They are formed of a metal alloy and provide strong protection for teeth, but some patients are put off by the shiny metallic colour and prefer a more natural-looking restoration.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns

These crowns have a metal substructure with tooth-coloured porcelain layered over the top. They are very strong and blend into your natural teeth, but the porcelain can chip through long-term use. The margins can also appear dark if showing on front teeth.

Monolithic zirconia crowns

Monolithic zirconia is the strongest and most aesthetic material we use for crowns on the back teeth. Each crown is custom-made, metal-free and highly biocompatible, meaning they are kind to your tissues and don’t show any dark margins.

Layered zirconia crowns

We use layered zirconia crowns for restorations of the front teeth. They have a solid zirconia substructure with high-strength e-max porcelain layered on top. These crowns are incredibly realistic and often indistinguishable from a natural tooth. They are also kinder to your teeth because we don’t have to remove as much natural enamel to make room for them.
