What is gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by the plaque that builds up daily on your teeth. If this bacteria is not removed, it begins to irritate your gums, causing them to become red, sore and inflamed, and making them bleed when brushed. Some people are more susceptible to gum disease than others, and genetic factors often play a part. Gum disease is often painless until it is too late.

The early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, can be reversed with careful oral hygiene care. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, causing receding gums, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. This condition can’t be reversed, but we can help you manage it with appropriate treatment.

What does gum disease care involve?

The treatment for gum disease varies depending on its severity. For early-stage gum disease (gingivitis), a thorough scale and polish is often all that is needed. We will meticulously clean away stubborn plaque and tartar, reaching areas that are difficult to clean with your toothbrush at home.

For more advanced cases, a deep cleaning procedure called root planing or debridement may be necessary. This involves cleaning below the gum line to remove bacteria and tartar from the roots of your teeth. We will make sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure, using a local anaesthetic if needed.

We also take the time to give you lots of advice to help you manage and prevent gum disease at home. This includes tips for your tooth brushing routine, use of interdental brushes and diet.
