Why do I need an extraction?

You may need a tooth extraction for a variety of reasons, including extensive decay or advanced gum disease. Other common reasons are to remove impacted wisdom teeth or take out a baby tooth that has not fallen out and is blocking a permanent tooth from erupting. Extractions are also sometimes necessary to create more room in the mouth for orthodontic treatment or to ensure that new dentures fit correctly.

Extractions can be simple or surgical, depending on your case. More complex extractions may require a small incision to be made in your gum in order to remove an impacted or large tooth.

What does the treatment involve?

Before we begin, we review your medical history and any medications you are taking to ensure the procedure is safe for you. We then administer local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth.

During the extraction, we work at a pace that is right for you. You are always in control, and we ensure you are relaxed and comfortable throughout. For simple extractions, we loosen the tooth with dental forceps until it comes out easily. Some teeth may need a helping hand in the form of minor oral surgery, and take a bit longer.

We provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery following your tooth extraction.
